Dr. Laura Bowman is a young widow who's unwittingly drawn into political turmoil while vacationing in Burma in the late 1980s. Bowman initially left San Francisco with her sister in an attempt to escape painful memories of her husband and son's violent deaths. But her fight to escape to Thailand could prove just as harrowing.

Beyond Rangoon is a 1995 American biographical drama thriller film directed by John Boorman about Laura Bowman, an American tourist who vacations in the country of Burma in 1988, the year in which the 8888 Uprising takes place. Though a work of fiction, it was inspired by real people and real events. The film was mostly filmed in Malaysia.
