Kim Shay a perdu son mari, Christian, policier, voici une douzaine d'années. Elle est en ce moment très ennuyée car sa fille, Sara, âgée de 11 ans, se réveille en sursaut, persuadée qu'un homme cherche à la tuer. De mystérieuses coupures apparaissent sur le corps de Sara après chaque cauchemar. Un spécialiste pense que la jeune fille se mutile et qu'elle a besoin de suivre un traitement.
