Como todos los años, el comisario Paul Bellamy va a pasar unos días a Nimes a casa de la familia de su mujer. Ella sólo piensa en hacer algún crucero por países lejanos, pero Paul odia viajar. En esta ocasión, tiene un doble pretexto para no hacerlo: por una parte, su hermanastro, un tarambana aficionado al alcohol, se presenta sin previo aviso; por otra, llega a la casa pidiendo socorro un hombre al que persiguen.
